“Back Home • Heimkehr” at Galerie Mutter Fourage in Berlin-Wannsee.
On 20 June 2026, the opening of BACK HOME • Heimkehr, a solo exhibition by Ukrainian artist Serhiy Savchenko, took place at Galerie Mutter Fourage in Berlin-Wannsee, Germany. The exhibition remained open until 26 July 2026 and presented the artist’s most recent body of work created during the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Following his participation in group exhibitions at Galerie Mutter Fourage in 2022 and 2023, this exhibition marked Savchenko’s first comprehensive solo presentation at the gallery. It featured paintings created between 2023 and 2026, bringing together interior scenes, cityscapes, landscapes, and symbolic compositions united by a single emotional theme — the meaning of home.
At the heart of the exhibition stands a simple yet powerful image: an empty chair with clothing left upon it. In Savchenko’s paintings, this everyday object becomes a symbol of absence, memory, waiting, and hope. The missing human figure is suggested only through the clothes left behind, transforming an ordinary domestic scene into a universal reflection on displacement, loss, and the longing to return home.
Rather than illustrating war directly, the exhibition explores its emotional consequences. The paintings speak about silence, resilience, belonging, and the fragile hope of reunion. Rich layers of colour, expressive textures, and luminous light create works that balance sorrow with optimism, revealing the enduring strength of memory and human connection.
Alongside the recurring “chair” motif, the exhibition included landscapes and urban spaces inspired by Lviv, Gdańsk, Berlin, and other European cities. Together, these works redefine “home” not as a geographical place but as an emotional and cultural space carried within each person.
